You knew it was coming. With five matches of top 25 teams playing one another this weekend, the AP Top 10 was going to look a little different on Monday. What you didn’t know was Florida State was going to lose to a BAD NC State team. We also couldn’t predict how the chips would fall after Saturday’s match ups were all said and done. This is how the top 10 looks, but did they get it right? Let’s discuss……
1. Alabama (60)
2. Oregon
3. South Carolina
4. Florida
5. West Virginia
6. Kansas State
7. Notre Dame
8. Ohio State
9. LSU
10. Oregon State
Now, I have no issues with Alabama ranked number one. They are by far and away the best team in college football. I’m fairly certain they would give the Cleveland Browns a run for their money.
I also take no issue with Oregon ranked at number two. At least not until they have their annual “no show” in whatever bowl game they go to. Their offense is cute in the Pac 12, but as recent bowl history will tell you, it doesn’t stand up against the college football elite.
I think West Virginia is still underrated. Yes their defense is awful and will more than likely cost them a game, but until someone out-scores Geno Smith, I think they’re the third best team in the country. If they played in the SEC, the pollsters would have them ranked 1B right alongside Alabama.
So that leaves us with South Carolina and Florida in the top 5. I am glad the Gamecocks finally got over their big game hump. They absolutely belong in the top 5. They just need to slide one spot back to number four.
Florida, no Gator fan, you’re not a top 5 team. Yes you beat LSU, but LSU’s offense belongs in the Big 10 with the rest of the athletically challenged teams in college football. Florida’s entire schedule this year is far from impressive. The only real chance the Gators have to prove themselves is when they host the Ole Ball Coach. Now that’s can’t miss TV.
I think Kansas State and Notre Dame should both slide ahead of the Gators. Yes, I was hard on the Irish last week. I let my hatred for that school cloud the fact that they might be a legit National Title contender. I’ll have more on Notre Dame in my weekly Picks.
So that leaves us with Ohio State, Oregon State, and LSU. I think the Buckeyes are ranked right where they need to be. The Buckeyes have their own massive issues on defense, but how can you questions Urban Meyer and Braxton Miller. Yes the offense starts slow, but they always seem to find the right gear when they need too. Braxton gets better in his offense every week, and he’s only a sophomore. Two and a half more years of Meyer and Miller…..oh it’s good to be a Buckeye!
The back half of this poll is almost correct; Oregon State should be ranked in the spot ahead of LSU. I tried my best to get LSU out of the top 10, I do not think they belong there, but when you look at the teams behind them, it’s hard not to put them in the 10 spot.
Zig’s Top 10
1. Alabama
2. Oregon
3. West Virginia
4. South Carolina
5. Kansas State
6. Notre Dame
7. Florida
8. Ohio State
9. Oregon State
10. LSU
Quick side note: Did you ever imagine a time where you would see two teams from the State of Oregon ranked in the top 10 and only two teams from the Big 10 ranked in the top 25? WOW – this isn’t your father’s college football!
