I love sports so much. I love almost everything about sports. Being able to hang out with friends and family to watch a game is great. Rooting for your team as they pull out that last second win and even the butterflies before a big game is fantastic.
What is becoming less attractive about sports is going to the games. Even though I can watch every single game in any sport from the comfort of my home I still love attending live sporting events. The live sporting event is becoming less of an attraction to me though. With all of the violence and random acts of douchebaggery at stadiums around the country it’s getting harder to convince myself to attend these live games.
I decided to write this after a friend of mine experienced some “random acts of douchebaggery” at a recent sporting event. It just pissed me off. While he was walking to his car someone, randomly, starting yelling at him and then spit at/on him. Obviously this douche bag had been over-served. There were other things that he witnessed at his tailgate and other tailgates as well.
It occurred to me that more and more people think that attending a live sporting event and tailgating gives you the right to act like an asshole. Just because you’re drunk doesn’t give you a pass to be a dick. What alcohol does, in mass quantities, is bring out your inner personality…the real you. If you’re a dick you can hide it when you’re sober but when you knock back a few ‘tall boys’ your true douchey personality shines bright for all to see.
I’m not going to complain that “I can’t even take my son to a football game anymore.” You can still go to games and have a great time without running into these people. These are the “2 percenters” that I have talked about before. They are the “Bubba’s” that just want to ruin your time because their life is so completely miserable.
Here’s the problem though…I will use the Ohio State Buckeyes as an example because I live in Columbus. Ohio stadium holds 102,329 people, officially. In and around the stadium there are, approximately, another 200,000 people tailgating. That makes a total of over 300,000 people drinking, partying, etc. They are all confined to a pretty small area. Even if only 2% of sports fans are complete douche bags that means that there are over 6,000 assholes running around on any given Saturday on Ohio State’s campus.
Even though no alcohol is served at Ohio Stadium, there are plenty of bars, tailgates and convenient stores that sell enough douche juice to ensure that everyone can have their inflated sense of worth for the day.
You can do the math for any team, college or pro, and come out with the same type of numbers. The bigger the stadium capacity, the more popular the team, the more drunk assholes will be walking around looking to ruin your game day experience.
I can handle people saying things to me, I am a grown man and can handle myself in almost any given situation. What happens when that one douche bag is around three of his drunk douche bag friends though? You know these fuckers travel in packs, like wild dogs. What happens when a little “back and forth” turns into you getting jumped by a gang of drunken neanderthals looking to start trouble? You end up in the hospital. No one will help you…NO ONE. No one wants to get involved in that situation because then they might be going to the hospital too.
Basically, what we are doing, as fans, is paying $300 for tickets, food and parking to be entered into some random drawing in a douche bag’s fight club sweepstakes. No thanks!
I just saw this same topic discussed on HBO’s Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel. The question posed in the story was, what is being done to prevent this? PREVENT?? Nothing can be done to prevent any of this from happening. Here’s the equation…massive quantities of alcohol + Douche bag + Testosterone = someone’s day will be ruined. I’m not trying to say that tailgate’s should not have alcohol…as I wrote earlier, alcohol does not give you a free pass to be a dick.
What we all need to do when going to a game is travel with a group of people, if possible. I’ve noticed that douche bags, even drunk one’s, are less likely to attack a large group of people.
I’m not sure what we, as fans, can do to help the situation but I do know that we all need to keep our head on a swivel at all times before, during and after the game. If you attend any live sporting events, please be safe and if you are one of these douche bags, leave your bullshit at home.
