Jay Cutler is one of those athletes that no one can figure out. He plays like a top five quarterback one week and then like a rookie the next. One thing is for sure when watching Cutler, when things start going bad it’s hard to stop the bleeding.
Thursday night was no different. Cutler went 11 of 27 for 126 yards, with 1 TD and 4 INTs. After the Bears opening day win over the Colts Cutler looked very good. The whole Bears team looked like a contender. After Thursday we all realized that it was the same old Jay Cutler and the same old Bears.
I don’t really have an ax to grind with Cutler but, as someone who defended him in Denver and even when he first went to the Bears, he is a ticking time bomb that explodes at any given moment and can’t recover from a bad play. His body language tells the whole story. He loses his cool and can’t seem to get his composure back when things start to go bad.
His pre and post game comments to the press are like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Jackass. His comments before the game on Thursday included statements like, “Our speed guys are going to get around them and our big guys are going to throw and go … We invite press coverage. We invite man. And if we get in that type of game, our guys outside have to make some plays for us.”

His comments after the game sounded a bit different. After being asked about yelling at his linemen and keeping his emotions under control Cutler said, “I care about this…This isn’t a hobby for me. I’m not doing this for my health. I’m trying to win football games and trying to get first downs. When we’re not doing the little things the right way, I’m going to say something. If they want a quarterback who doesn’t care, they can get somebody else.” Spoken like a true malcontent. I know he hates the press, as do most athletes, but he needs to not only keep his composure on the field but during the press conference afterwards.
I’m not going to defend Jay Cutler but when he was asked if he ever played out the scenario of the game he just played in his head Cutler responded with a very sarcastic, “yeah, I dream about throwing four picks and getting sacked seven times….obviously not.” Seriously? Some of these reporters ask questions just to get a reaction. These reporters need to be reassigned. It’s not hard to get a sarcastic reaction from Cutler after a game like this. Questions like these are why athletes hate reporters.
Charles Woodson said it best when he was asked about Cutler. Woodson said, “Same old Jay. We don’t need luck…we just need to be in position. Jay will throw us the ball.” Well said.
I’m not trying to say that Marino, Elway, Brady, Manning or any other great quarterback never had a bad game or that they were never shitty with the press after a bad game. What those guys didn’t do is talk trash before those bad games. The great ones were masters at answering questions before the game and saying nothing. Cutler needs to take a page out of their books. You can’t talk shit before a game and then be a bitch after the game when you throw four interceptions. Take your lumps like a man. Cutler’s cry baby act is getting old.
The talent is there but Cutler needs to focus on being the best quarterback he can be and keeping his mouth shut. Work on your body language too, Jay. It looks like you’re about to cry every time the camera finds you on the sideline. Cutler needs some work and maybe a psychologist to help him out.
